What happens when accessing care becomes a challenge in itself?
More than 100 phone calls.
That’s what it took to find a psychiatrist who would see a pediatric Medicaid patient in person — a striking example shared in the latest episode of House Call with Dr. Kaul that underscores the barriers families can face when navigating an increasingly complex healthcare system.
House Call with Dr. Kaul is Upward Health’s podcast series on the realities of delivering care to patients with complex needs, featuring candid conversations with the clinicians doing that work. In this episode, Chief Medical Officer Dr. Anubhav Kaul is joined by Dr. Laura Livaditis, pediatrician and Upward Health Medical Director for Pediatrics, and Dr. Rachel Conrad, child and adolescent psychiatrist, for a conversation about how pediatric care can evolve to better meet the needs of children and families.
Dr. Livaditis shares lessons from delivering pediatric care in homes and communities and how those experiences continue to shape her approach to meeting families where they are.
Dr. Conrad brings the behavioral health perspective, exploring the challenges families face accessing mental health services and navigating a system with more resources, but also more fragmentation and complexity.
Together, they explore what it will take to make pediatric care more accessible, coordinated and connected, from bringing care beyond the clinic to helping families navigate the many providers, schools, agencies and services involved in a child’s care.
The conversation comes as Upward Health recently launched pediatric services, expanding our whole-person care model to serve patients across the lifespan.
