Upward Health names Benjamin Lowenburg, MD as SVP of Clinical Excellence and National Medical Director focused on Behavioral Health

We are pleased to announce the promotion of Benjamin Lowenburg, MD to Senior Vice President of Clinical Excellence and National Medical Director focused on Behavioral Health. Dr. Lowenburg has been a key consultant to the Upward Health clinical team since August 2021, and he now joins full-time in this new role. He will lead the maturation and expansion of the company’s integrated behavioral health programs.

Dr. Lowenburg is board certified in psychiatry, forensic psychiatry, and addiction medicine, and has over a decade of experience in his field. As a forensic psychiatrist, he has treated individuals with mental illnesses and substance use disorders in a variety of settings – from outpatient offices to residential facilities to prisons.

Prior to Upward Health, Dr. Lowenburg worked at Tulane School of Medicine, Department of Psychiatry, where he taught residents and fellows. He served as a team psychiatrist treating patients with some of the most complex behavioral health conditions in Louisiana. He maintains his academic affiliation and roles as staff psychiatrist at the Louisiana State Forensic Psychiatric Hospital and Medical Director of Bridge House/Grace House, a non-profit residential substance abuse rehabilitation center, in New Orleans.

Dr. Lowenburg will oversee the clinical development and ongoing administration of the Behavioral Health Program, including a focus on Addiction, with the goal of improving overall patient health. He will also lead the clinical supervision of the behavioral health providers and focus on integration within the total healthcare system.

“Throughout my work in community psychiatry, I have noticed the fragmentation of healthcare which leads to poor outcomes,” said Dr. Lowenburg. “Upward Health offers physical, behavioral, and social healthcare, or as we call it, whole-person care, which is rare and crucial for the patients we treat. This approach meets a patient at their starting point and addresses the gaps in care I have dedicated my career to addressing.”

“When Ben came to us as a consultant, he was natural fit on our team – we saw staff seeking out his guidance and supervision across our programs,” said Glen Moller, Chief Executive Officer of Upward Health. “Ben personifies our whole-person care approach with his academic and experiential excellence, as well as his hands-on compassion. We are thrilled to expand our behavioral health department under his leadership and vision.”
