Breast Cancer Awareness at Upward Health

As we recognize Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we want to highlight the critical role our Care Specialists play in encouraging patients to prioritize preventive health screenings. Early detection through routine screenings often leads to a better prognosis and more effective treatment options. We’re proud to share a story that exemplifies the impact of our work and the dedication of our team in supporting patients on their journey to better health.

One of our New York patients was hesitant to get her first mammogram. Her primary worry was pain, and it had made her very anxious about moving forward. After several occurrences of discussing the need with her Care Specialist, she agreed to schedule the mammogram appointment with her Care Specialist’s support. This side-by-side encouragement helped her overcome months of hesitation and led to the successful scheduling of the overdue screening. To her surprise, the screening was painless, but the results revealed early-stage breast cancer. Thanks to early detection, she was able to undergo a lumpectomy and radiation therapy and is expected to be cancer-free. She expressed her gratitude to Upward Health for the persistent reminders from her Care Specialist on the critical role of early detection.

“This story highlights the power of patient-centered care in overcoming healthcare-related fears. Thanks to the support of her Care Specialist and Care Team, the patient finally scheduled her screening, which led to both early detection and successful treatment. It demonstrates the lifesaving impact of preventive care and the crucial role it plays in achieving improved health outcomes.”

The team working with this patient, along with others in a New York cohort, successfully increased breast cancer screening completion rates by 8 percentage points over the last six months.

Our focus on preventive care has a meaningful impact on the lives of our patients. By working together and continuing to advocate for our patients, we can ensure more people receive the care they need at the right time.
